What are stems – and what aren't they?
Stems Group tracks are: several related individual tracks that are exported together as a single audio file. Forty project tracks are thus usually reduced to 3–5 files – for example, drums, bass, instruments, vocals, and optionally FX for… Hall—and delay components. Stems are therefore neither the finished mixdown (a stereo file) nor the complete individual tracks (multitracks), but rather the intermediate layer for stem mastering, remixes, or live setups. The typical divisions: 3 stems (Drums · Instruments incl. Bass · Vocals), 4 stems (Drums · Bass · Instruments · Vocals) or 5 stems (plus FX). Therefore, when in doubt, it's better to group things sensibly than to deliver everything individually – you will later export these groups as stems.
The golden rule first: Stems are your mix, just divided up. Same levels, same Panning, same group processing – nothing is “improved” for export.
The basic rules before you export stems
No matter which DAW you want to export your stems to – the same requirements always apply:
- Export all stems from bar 1 / 0 seconds – even if a group only joins in during the chorus. This is the only way to ensure all files are synchronized.
- Exactly the same length: Each stem runs from the beginning of the song to the end, plus 4-8 bars of reserve to allow reverb and delay tails to fully decay.
- Format: WAV or AIFF in 24-bit or 32-bit float, with the Sample Rate of your project (44,1 or 48 kHz) – no MP3, no upscaling.

- Group processing remains in place: EQ, compression And effects on the groups are part of your sound and therefore belong in the stems.
- Clear naming:

Logic Pro
Group related tracks into summing stacks and bounce each group individually: Mute all other stacks, set the cycle from bar 1 to the end of the song plus a buffer, then File > Bounce (Cmd + B) with PCM/WAV, 24-bit, project sample rate, and normalize off. Cubase / Nuendo
Open File > Export > Audio Mixdown and in Channel Batch Export, select the group channels (not the individual tracks). Set locators from bar 1 to the end of the song plus a fade-out reserve, select WAV with 24-bit/32-bit float and the project sample rate, and turn off normalization – this will export all stems synchronously in one pass.
Ableton Live
Group tracks together, then go to File > Export Audio/Video and select the respective group under "Rendered Track" – or export via "All Individual Tracks" if your group structure already corresponds to stems. Set the export range via the arrangement selection from 1.1.1 to the end of the song plus reserve, WAV 24-bit, normalize off.
FL Studio
Route related channels in the mixer to group tracks, then export via File > Export > WAV with the "Split mixer tracks" option enabled – FL Studio will then create a separate file for each mixer track. Also, ensure that only the group tracks carry a signal, the master insert is empty, and the song length, including the fade-out, is set.

The most common mistakes when exporting stems
Exporting stems rarely works perfectly on the first try – these six mistakes are the most common in stem mastering, and they all cost you an export round:
- Limiter or mastering chain on the sum: The stems arrive already compressed; mastering can't recover anything from that. Clear the master bus before exporting.
- Cut-off tails: The export ends with the last bar; reverb and delay tails audibly break off. Therefore, always add 4–8 bars of buffer.
- Different starting points: Individual stems were exported from their first use instead of from bar 1 – this causes everything to shift when merging them. Export all stems from bar 0 onwards.
- Send effects are missing or duplicated: If the reverb is routed to a return that feeds multiple groups, it will either be missing from the stems or appear twice. The solution: Route the return to a specific group or export it as a separate FX stem.
- Incorrect format: MP3, 16-bit, or an upscaled sample rate sacrifice quality. Therefore, use WAV/AIFF, 24-bit/32-bit float, project sample rate.
- Stems louder than the mix: Optimizing or normalizing stems during export will destroy the agreed-upon balance. The sum of the stems must exactly match the mix.

The cross-check before uploading
Before you upload anything, it's worth doing one last test: Import all stems into an empty project, set all faders to 0 dB, and listen to them against your mixdown. Do all the files start cleanly together? Does the result sound exactly like your mix? Do the keys decay completely? Five minutes of checking can therefore save you an entire round of corrections.
No more project file? The emergency solution
If only the finished mixdown exists, AI tools for stem separation can be a last resort – they roughly extract the drums, bass, vocals, and rest from the stereo file. While the quality is sufficient for sketches and remix ideas, it falls noticeably short of true DAW exports: artifacts in the high frequencies and blurred transients are the norm. Therefore, for a release, the rule is: true stems should be extracted from the project itself.
