DDP MASTER FAQ
WHAT IS DDP?
DDP stands for Disc Description Protocol and was developed or introduced by Doug Carson & Associates to facilitate the delivery of audio data to the pressing plant after mastering in order to avoid mistakes and to provide security for track order and CD text. This "security" is possible through the included CD text and the checksum, found in the DDP package or DDP images.
HOW IS A DDP CREATED?
The DDP image is created according to the Sony Red Book Standard , which means that the audio data must be available in 16-bit on a CD and have a sampling rate (sample rate) of 44.1 kHz. A song must be at least 4 seconds long, and a CD can contain a maximum of 99 tracks.
ADVANTAGES OF A DDP
One advantage of DDP mastering is that there are no C2 and C3 errors during burning. These are often caused by bad burners or lasers, leading to tiny scratches on the CD that are not visible to the naked eye. Additionaly, transmitting a DDP image prevents unintentional opening and playback by managers, label executives or other fellow musicians, thus avoiding scratches on the CD or audio data during playback.
DISTRIBUTION OF AUDIO DATA ON THE DDP IMAGE
Since a total of 24 bits are available on an audio CD - 16 bits for the audio data with a 96 dB dynamic range and 8 bits for the subchannel, also known as the mantissa - it is possible to pack CD information, such as CD text, into the 8 bits. This includes, for example, the title, artist's name, ISRC code, EAN code, songwriter, arranger, genre, a space for a short message, and the pause times.
HOW IS A DDP MASTER CREATED?
A DDP master is created using software, incorporating the audio data - your songs and the CD text. All audio files are imported into the DDP project, pause times are set, the sequence is determined, and the CD text along with all necessary information is added. Afterwards, the CD image is created. This usually includes a .DAT file, a checksum, and the individual tracks on the CD.
Typically, this DDP master is then zipped and sent to the press plant.
