DDP-Image FAQ – Your questions, our answers
What is a DDP-Image?
A DDP-Image (Disc Description Protocol) is a digital master format for CD production. It is designed to avoid errors when delivering audio data to pressing plants.
The DDP-Image contains all essential information such as track order, pause times and CD-Text. It also includes an integrated checksum that ensures your master is flawless and exactly as intended.
Why should I use a DDP-Image instead of an audio CD?
A DDP-Image is the standard for professional CD production. In contrast to self-burned audio CDs, a DDP-Image produces no C2 or C3 read errors, which can occur due to poor burners or scratches.
In addition, a DDP-Image cannot be accidentally played or altered, e.g., by labels or managers. This protects your master from unnecessary loss of quality.
How do I create a DDP-Image?
A DDP-Image is created according to the Sony Red Book standard.
This means:
16 Bit / 44.1 kHz (standard for audio CDs)
Maximum of 99 tracks
Minimum length of 4 seconds per track
We handle the complete creation of your DDP-Image – including CD-Text, ISRC codes and pause times.
If you’re unsure whether your material is ready, feel free to use our Mix analysis or learn more on our Mastering page.
How do you create my DDP-Image?
- You upload your final audio files and CD-Text information via our upload form.
- We check your data and send you a €60 invoice.
- After payment is received, we create your pressing-plant-ready DDP-Image including all metadata.
- You receive a download link with your zipped DDP package, which can be forwarded directly to the pressing plant.
How long does it take to create the DDP-Image?
The processing time is typically 3–7 working days after receipt of your data and payment.
If you need it faster, we offer prioritised express processing – ideal for fixed pressing-plant deadlines.
Is a DDP the same as CD mastering?
No. A DDP is not mastering.
No sound optimisation or processing takes place.
We only handle the technical preparation of your already finished master files for CD production.
What data do I need for a DDP?
To create a DDP-Image, we need:
– WAV files in CD standard (16 Bit, 44.1 kHz)
– One file per track
– A complete tracklist (Excel, spreadsheet or PDF) including:
• Track title
• Album title
• Performer
• Track order
• ISRC codes (if available)
• Optional: UPC/EAN
Why must the audio files be in CD standard (16 Bit / 44.1 kHz)?
DDP is based on the Red Book standard for audio CDs.
Pressing plants can only process this format.
If you supply files in other formats (e.g. 24 Bit, 48 kHz), they must be converted to the CD standard beforehand – otherwise this may lead to errors in CD production.
