What happens during album mastering?
During mastering, the engineer listens to each song in context and adjusts the timbre, dynamics, and volume until all the tracks create a coherent overall sound. Transitions and silences are adjusted to ensure your album sounds professional on any medium.
Why is album mastering necessary even if the mix sounds good?
Even a cleanly mixed track can sound surprisingly different next to the others. Mastering brings all tracks to the same sonic level, ensuring your album is cohesive and competitive across all platforms.
How long does album mastering take?
The time depends on the scope: For a full album, you should plan on about a week, a shorter EP usually takes a few days, and individual tracks are usually finished within 48 hours. Express processing is possible upon request.
What technical requirements should my mixes meet?
Upload your mixes as uncompressed WAV or AIFF files at their original sample rate—ideally 24-bit or 32-bit float. Leave about -6 dB of headroom, avoid limiters and normalization, and don't clip tails.
Should you master each song individually or the entire album in one project?
An album is mastered as a whole. This allows for volume and frequency responses to be adjusted and transitions to be harmonious. Each track is optimized individually, but always within the context of the overall work.
What is the difference between analog, digital and AI mastering?
Analog mastering uses real hardware like tube compressors and often adds warmth and character. Digital mastering uses high-quality plug-ins and is more flexible and budget-friendly. AI tools deliver automated results without personal adjustments. Human mastering combines technology and experience to create a tailor-made result.
Can mastering save a bad mix?
Mastering polishes your sound, but it's no substitute for a good mix. Major balance or timing errors can't be completely corrected. To achieve its full potential, the mix should be solid; if in doubt, a pre-mix check can help.
What is the difference between EP and LP mastering?
An EP usually contains four to six tracks and is reminiscent of a short story, while an LP has seven or more tracks and is more like a novel. In both cases, the goal is to connect the pieces; however, more songs mean more time and fine-tuning.
How does album mastering differ from single mastering?
Single mastering focuses on making a song shine on its own—loud, clear, and captivating. Album mastering focuses on the overall experience: volume levels are matched, the order and pauses are planned, and previously released singles are also adjusted to ensure everything appears seamless.
Does a previously mastered song need to be remastered if it becomes part of an EP or album?
Often, it's enough to listen to the existing master again in the context of the album and make minor adjustments to ensure it fits harmoniously. Only if the balance deviates significantly does a complete remastering make sense.
Which master files will I receive?
You can get several formats upon request: standard CD files (16-bit/44,1 kHz), high-resolution versions (e.g., 24-bit/48 kHz), Apple Digital Masters, and a DDP image for CD production. Special pre-master files are available for vinyl.
Do I need separate masters for streaming/CD and vinyl?
A digital master works on streaming platforms and CDs. However, vinyl has physical limitations—low frequencies need to be centered, peaks need to be absorbed, and the volume needs to be adjusted. Therefore, a separate vinyl master is worthwhile for a pressing.
How important is the order of the songs and the breaks?
The dramatic structure determines the impact of your album. The order of the songs and the length of the breaks influence the dynamics and the arc of tension. During mastering, fades, transitions, and spacing are set so that your story is told effectively.
How many tracks should an album have?
An album typically consists of 8 to 15 tracks. The exact number is less important than the musical cohesion and the dramatic structure of the album.
Are 15 songs too many for an album?
Fifteen songs aren't inherently too many, but they can demand more attention from the listener. During album mastering, special attention is paid to ensuring that a coherent narrative arc is maintained, even on longer albums.
How many songs does an album typically have?
On average, an album contains about 10 to 12 songs. This number has proven effective in maintaining a balance between musical diversity and listenability.
How long should an album be?
The typical length of an album is between 35 and 50 minutes. This duration allows for a clear musical arc without overwhelming the listener's attention.
Is 40 minutes a good length for an album?
Yes, around 40 minutes is considered a very good album length. It offers sufficient space for musical development and can be optimally mastered for various release formats.
