Audio Compressor Release Time Calculator

The Audio Compressor Release Time Calculator Peak-Studios offers the optimal settings for vocals, drums, mastering & Co. – for more punch, control and transparency in your Mix!

What does release time do on a compressor?

The release time (also called response time) determines how quickly a Compressor returns to normal after the signal exceeds or falls below the set point.
Release times that are too short can cause pumping or distortion; release times that are too long can make the signal feel sluggish.

Depending on the application area – vocals, drums, bass or mastering compression - the ideal values vary. The calculator helps you quickly find practical settings.

How does the compressor release time calculator work?

The calculator uses:

  • input of the BPM your song
  • Material type (vocals, drums, mastering ...)
  • Compressor attack time (optional)
  • Algorithm with musical time signature reference (e.g. 1/8, 1/4 note)

The result: A musically useful release-time interval that you can apply directly in your plugin - for better groove and fewer artifacts.

Recommended release times for different applications

Application Typical release time Notes
Vocal compressor 50-150ms Very short release times can sound squeezed
Drum bus compression 30-80ms For punch and groove
Bass compressor 100-300ms For sustain and tonal stability
mastering Limiter 100-400ms Avoid overcompression
Multiband Compressor band-dependent Choose by frequency range and program material

For practical use, see our Multiband Compressor Tutorial.

Table: guidelines by BPM and note value

BPM1/8 note (ms)1/4 note (ms)1/16 note (ms)

140214428107

💡 Note: subtract the attack time from the value to determine your net release time.

Note:
The calculated release time corresponds to the selected note value (musically appropriate to the tempo), minus the attack time.
Important: The release time should be at least 50 ms, as shorter release times below 50 ms can cause unnatural artifacts, distortion or audible pumping.
The material type selection shows typical release ranges.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about compressor release time

Usually 50-150 ms. If the release is too short, the signal can pump unnaturally.

The compressor returns too quickly, which can create audible artifacts or level fluctuations.

It depends on the track, but often sits around 200-400 ms. The goal is natural control without obvious level jumps.

Yes. Each frequency band can need its own release time. The calculator provides useful starting values.

Yes. If you know the BPM and material type, the tool also works as a starting point for hardware or live use.
