Dynamic range in music production
Dynamic range describes the difference between the quietest and loudest parts of an audio signal or piece of music, measured in decibels (dB). A large dynamic range means pronounced differences in volume—as in classical music; a small dynamic range, as in heavily compressed productions, sounds consistently loud and dense.
What is dynamic range?
The word dynamics comes from the Greek and means power, momentum. In music, audio engineering and electroacoustics, it refers to the change in volume or loudness.

The dynamic range is the area between the loudest and quietest part of a piece of music or an acoustic or audio signal. Just as distances and weights are measured in km and kg, the unit for volume is decibels (dB). So, when a guitarist tells a bassist to "turn it up a notch so he can hear him better," the expression isn't so far-fetched, except that actually Decibel what is meant by this.

What is the dynamic range of 16-bit and 24-bit audio – and can you hear the difference?

As a rough guide, DR values below about 7 are considered very dense, values above 12 are considered dynamic.
How does the dynamic range differ depending on the music style?
It depends heavily on the genre: classical and jazz thrive on large dynamic shifts between quiet and loud passages, while pop, rock, and especially EDM are usually produced with a high degree of compression and consistently loud volume. There's no single "right" value – what matters is that the dynamics suit the piece and the desired effect.
How much dynamism should a master's degree retain?
There's no fixed target value – what's more important is that pressure and breath are in the right balance. A good master sounds loud enough without losing transients and liveliness. Especially since streaming normalizes to a uniform loudness level anyway, it's worthwhile to consciously preserve some dynamic range.
