Spotify Lossless Update: What Premium Listeners Get Now
What is Spotify Lossless?
“Lossless” means lossless playback: The music is FLAC container provided so that the bit information of the master is preserved. For listeners, this means more precise transients, cleaner highs, more dynamic reserve – provided Chain & surroundings (converter, headphones/speakers, room). Lossless is part of Spotify Premium and has been rolling out in over 2025 markets since September 50.
Important: Not all content is lossless (e.g. podcasts/audiobooks), and via Bluetooth is compressed again for technical reasons. If you want the full quality, use Cables or Spotify Connect.
Audio formats & quality levels
Spotify continues to offer compressed Ogg Vorbis (various bitrates) and now FLAC up to 24-bit/44,1 kHz.
| Stage | Purpose | technical |
|---|---|---|
| low | Save data | ≈ 24 kbit/s, Ogg |
| Normal | Standard mobile | ≈ 96 kbit/s, Ogg |
| High | Better streaming | ≈ 160 kbit/s, Ogg |
| Very high | Maximum compression | ≈ 320 kbit/s, Ogg |
| Lossless | Lossless | FLAC, up to 24-bit/44,1 kHz |
Note: "24-bit" increases dynamic range; the sample rate remains CD-native (44,1 kHz). This is practical for most masters and setups – Hi-Res above 44,1/48 kHz rarely offers audible advantages in everyday use. However, all other streaming providers have already standardized playback at 48 kHz. YouTube was the latest to follow suit with new guidelines. See also the following article:

Data & Storage: Expect significantly larger files. For smooth lossless playback, we recommend stable WiFi connectionFor offline listening, you'll need more device storage; previously downloaded tracks may need to be reloaded to be available in lossless format.
Device Practice: Bluetooth vs. Cable & Connect
Bluetooth: None of the common codecs transmits true lossless in practice – the stream is compressed again before transmission.
Cable/USB DAC: Delivers the cleanest transmission from the player to the headphones/amplifier.
Spotify Connect (Wi-Fi): Ideal for speakers/receivers (e.g., Sennheiser, Bose, Yamaha, Bluesound, Sonos, etc.). The app controls the sound, and the device streams directly.
Remember: If you hear "no difference" when switching to lossless, it is often due to Bluetooth headphones, room acoustics, or a non-lossless source.

Rollout frustration: Some markets will see the feature later; feature equality between countries is required.
Format debate: Audiophiles desire Hi-Res beyond 44,1 kHz; however, in everyday use, mastering reality, Bluetooth chains, and listening environments limit the usefulness.
Bluetooth limit: Many people listen on mobile devices – the lossless advantage often fizzles out there.
Practical tips for audio nerds & everyday users
