Children's choir recording in Guckheim
In this article we tell you about the children's choir recording in Guckheim as part of our children's and youth music projects.
Arrival and setup - A special day for the kids
On June 22, 2023, a special day of music happened in Guckheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, when the children's choir of the Brothers Grimm School for a unique recording session came together. Under the direction of Mr. Huth, who is also the headmaster and executive keyboardist, around 30-40 children from grades two to four gathered in the school's spacious sports hall.
The Guckheim Primary School is known for having every year in the choir despite its modest size, and this lends a truly remarkable atmosphere to this event. For this special day of music, a audio setup built up. The recording work started at around 8:30 a.m. and ended at around 15:30 p.m. Given the summer heat, breaks were taken to ensure the young singers could keep going.
3,2,1… Recording – The technical implementation
In order to be able to capture this unique event, the layout of the microphones was planned in advance.
At the heart of the recording was a Great A/B miking in conjunction with appropriately placed spot microphones. For this, two stereo pairs were Neumann KM183 microphones arranged with spherical characteristics at a distance of 45 cm. This large A/B miking proved to be an important instance as it captured the atmosphere of the room and created a balanced soundscape.
In order to properly record the children's singing performances, reliance was placed on the quality of the Universal Audio Apollo X6 and Apollo Twin Audio Interfaces. The two devices were cascaded together and provided a total of four preamps. In addition, preamps in the 500 format of the manufacturer SSL and Lindell Audio used. In total there were eight preamps and one DI box available for the keyboard input.
The sound engineer and supervisors worked with dedication and patience to ensure that each child was able to do their best. The 13 tracks recorded reflected the diversity of the musical repertoire and immortalized the unique energy and joy of the young singers. The sound recording of the children's choir at the Brothers Grimm School in Guckheim was undoubtedly a special event.
Thanks to the technical setup and the remarkable commitment of the young musicians, an authentic and captivating sound atmosphere was created. This day will no doubt remain a treasured memory of a musical experience that showcased community, talent and the magic of music.
