WHAT IS ELECTRO MASTERING?
Electro Mastering refers to the mastering of electronic music, particularly electronic dance music genres such as House, Techno, Trance, or Electro House. Electro Mastering takes into account the specific requirements and characteristics of electronic music to optimize it for release.
Electro Mastering typically involves the same steps as studio mastering or online mastering, such as stereo image enhancement, correction of frequency imbalances, volume optimization, and the use of limiting and compression. However, Electro Mastering involves making specific adjustments to accommodate the unique requirements and characteristics of electronic music.
This includes considerations like specific loudness standards used in electronic dance music to normalize the volume of tracks. Electro Mastering also involves the use of specific EQ settings and compression techniques suitable for electronic dance music.
Electro Mastering is crucial as it ensures that electronic music is at a high-quality level for release and takes into account the specific requirements and characteristics of the genre. WHAT IS ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC (EDM)?
Electronic dance music (EDM) encompasses various danceable music styles characterized by instruments such as synthesizers and samplers. Since the 90s, it has also included native processing (software-generated music). Apart from the vocal elements, all sounds in the song are synthetically produced and engineered by the producer.
HOW IS AN EDM SONG USUALLY STRUCTURED?
Characteristic of electronic dance music (EDM) is the constant repetition of melody and rhythm, creating a trance-like effect in the music. The introduction of unexpected elements or changes in patterns adds a certain liveliness to the music within the song. Often, 'drops' are used to provide variety in the track. Volume automations are also common in electronic music.
WHAT IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN EDM?
In EDM mixing and EDM mastering (Electronic Dance Music), a pronounced representation of the upper mids is crucial. The vocals are often positioned more within the beat, as opposed to over the beat, unlike in other music genres. A powerful sound and above-average loudness or compression in EDM mastering are additional features of electronic dance music.

LOW-END MIXING OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC (EDM)
The low-end frequency range can vary significantly depending on the song and subgenre. In most cases, it is clear that the kick drum should be centrally placed in the low-end: The deep, bass-heavy beats define the rhythm and danceability, making them essential for most genres of electronic music (EDM), such as House or Techno. The kick drum typically falls into the lowest frequency range below 100 Hz, the bass. To avoid losses in the perception of certain tracks due to too similar frequencies, the bass in the tone should be positioned above it and typically start from 100 Hz onwards. The subcomponent of the bassline can be optimally integrated into the sound below 100 Hz using sidechain compression.
Even though there are typical frequency divisions within certain genres, electronic music naturally thrives on the experimental handling of sounds. There is nothing wrong with the producer deviating from these "norms" to create a unique path and make the song danceable. However, every decision in the mixing process should be made with a specific goal in mind and not be arbitrary:

TARGET GROUP: DJ LIVE PERFORMANCE OR RADIO EDIT?
In the mixing process of EDM (electronic music or electronic dance music), it is essential to consider the target audience and end device We all know that feeling when the bass vibrates the air, the room starts to shake, and you begin to feel the music—not just hear it.
However, experiencing a strong bass with a smartphone speaker is challenging, and a mixdown for radio should not be tailored to be enjoyed only with high-quality headphones or subwoofers. If you don't want to compromise your mixdown for different devices, considering various edits is advisable.
In addition to the general radio edit (also known as mix edit, original mix edit, short edit), other versions of the song can be created specifically for different purposes. For example, in a club edit , not only is the mix tailored for a more powerful sound system, but it also allows a DJ to create smooth transitions between different songs, genres, or moods. This is achieved by starting and ending the song with a very simple and minimalist beat, often consisting of kick, bass, and hi-hats. Only gradually are the other elements like vocals, synths, or effects introduced into the mix.
ATTACK AND SUSTAIN - FOR EVEN MORE POWERFUL SOUND
If you want to emphasize a track even more—yes, once again, thinking about the kick drum—adjusting the envelope curve can work wonders. The key factors here are the effects of attack (a rise/increase of sound) and sustain (how long the sound is held). Utilizing an immediate attack for more speed or a slower attack combined with high sustain for added weight in the strike can make the sound even more powerful and robust.
Additionally, the sidechain technique or sidechain compression is another tool to enhance danceability and groove while integrating frequencies better in the mix. For example, David Guetta became famous for the rhythmic "pump effect" created by the set sidechain compression.
