Spatial impression in audio

Our brains process different levels of room acoustics and reverberation daily without us consciously thinking about it. That's precisely why even a musical novice quickly notices when a mix or mastering sounds too reverberant or was created with cheap reverb units. Reverb is therefore not just an effect, but a crucial tool for giving your song credibility and depth.

This guide will tell you exactly what reverb is, which five parameters you really need to know, and how to use reverb effectively in your music.mixingand in the masteringis used to achieve a clean depth of field.

What is reverb?

Reverb occurs when sound is reflected off walls, ceilings, and objects and returns to your ear with a slight delay. This reverberation subconsciously reveals the size and nature of a room: a small chamber sounds different than a large cathedral.

In mixing and mastering, you use this effect to give the listener a true sense of space in the audio. Reverb and depth layering are essential here, as they spatially arrange the individual instruments and ensure that the mix doesn't sound flat, but rather gains breadth and depth.

The 5 key parameters

Every reverb unit offers a variety of controls. These five parameters are the most important and significantly determine the character of your reverb. Understanding them allows you to precisely adjust almost any reverb.

  • Time:This determines the size of the room, i.e., the basic reverberation time. A short value simulates a small room, a long value a large hall.
  • Decay:describes the duration of the reverberation, i.e., how long the reverb tail lasts before it fades away.
  • Pre-delay:The time interval between the direct sound (the dry signal) and the onset of diffuse sound (the reverberation). This single parameter is the most important factor in creating depth of field; more on that in a moment.
  • HF Damp (High Frequency Damp):This controls how quickly the high frequencies decay in the reverberation. Natural spaces absorb high frequencies, therefore a dampened reverberation sounds more realistic.
  • Diffusion:This controls the level of detail in the reverb. A nearby signal has more detail than a distant one, which sounds more diffuse and washed out.

For example, if you only want to reverberate the lower midrange frequencies in a recorded piano sequence, you adjust both controls so that the range from approximately 250 to 600 Hz remains.

Reverb in mixing: depth layering

Depth layering is key to a three-dimensional mix. You achieve it through the combination of pre-delay and reverb time, and here's the central mechanism: Ashort pre-delay combined with a long reverb timeThis causes a signal to travel further away and therefore further back.longer pre-delayIt audibly separates the direct sound from the reverberation, bringing the signal forward, making it seem closer and more present.

In practice, you arrange the tracks from front to back like this: The vocals should be in the foreground and feel close, so they get little reverb and a short reverb tail. Next come the drums and bass. The leading melody underpins the vocals and is further in the background—figuratively speaking, the piano is behind the singer—so you give this track more reverb. Atmospheric effects get the highest settings and are thus layered furthest into the background.

Important: In the low-frequency range, i.e., bass and kick drum, you should largely avoid reverb. Reverb quickly makes these signals muddy and weak, reducing the space available for other tracks. Pads often don't need additional reverb either, as long release times already produce a similar effect.

Tip: To properly assess the room reverb of a song, we recommend listening through headphones. Feel free to combine different reverb tails or reverb types in the mix, as long as they are well-balanced. This creates a varied and layered effect. Different reverb types, such as spring reverb, or the use of an external effects unit can also be quite effective for individual tracks.

Reverb in mastering

In mastering, you use reverb much more sparingly and selectively than in mixing. It should be applied after the dynamics processing. Some colleagues add reverb before that, but we only partially agree: Only after the dynamics processing can the true reverberation level of the mid and side signals be properly assessed.

The task in mastering is to enhance the existing material, not to add something that was never in the mix. If you do decide to use reverb before dynamic processing, make absolutely sure that dynamic processors, as well as stereo widening or stereo imaging tools, are properly integrated with the subsequent dynamic processing.

A subtle high-shelf filter that moderately reduces the high frequencies helps when you want to increase the room ambience on an instrument without making the mix too bright or harsh at the front.

Pre-delay is the time interval between the direct sound, i.e., the dry signal, and the onset of diffuse sound, i.e., the reverb. It is the most important parameter for depth perception: A longer pre-delay audibly separates the signal and reverb, bringing the track forward, while a short pre-delay makes it sound further back.

In the low-frequency range, you should largely avoid reverb. Reverb quickly makes bass and kick drum sound muddy and weak, and it takes up space in the mix for other tracks. Keep these elements rather dry and create spatiality instead through vocals, melody, and atmospheric effects in the mids and highs.

In mastering, reverb is used very sparingly and selectively. Its purpose is to enhance the existing material, not to add space that's missing in the mix. Use it after the dynamics processing, because only then can the true reverb level of the mid and side signals be reliably assessed.

Arrange the tracks spatially: The vocals should be at the front with minimal reverb and a short reverb tail, followed by the drums and bass. The leading melody and atmospheric effects should have more reverb and thus be positioned further back. It's best to listen to the spatial arrangement using headphones, as any inconsistencies will be particularly noticeable there.

HF damping (high-frequency damping) determines how quickly the high frequencies decay in the reverberation. Natural spaces absorb high frequencies over time, so a slightly damped reverb sounds more realistic and less artificial. Conversely, a reverb that is too bright and undamped quickly sounds harsh and unpleasantly intrusive in the mix.
