WHAT IS MIXING?

Under the term Mixing (also known as "audio mixing") s the process of combining all the individual audio tracks recording during a music production into a cohesive sound. While each instrument and vocal recording is initially captured on separate, independent tracks during the recording process, mixing involves blending these tracks into a unified sound, referred to as a "mixdown." The advantage of initially recording each source separately is the ability to address imperfections and errors in a targeted manner. During the creation of the mixdown, the goal is to merge the audio from the various tracks into a single composite signal (often referred to as a "stem") while adjusting their Volume, dynamics and panorama settings in the different tracks to a single one, the stem . Typically, mixing begins with adjusting the volume levels and panning (stereo placement) of individual elements such as instruments and vocal tracks. This involves deciding how loud and from which direction each track should be heard. Subsequently, these tracks are processed using various tools such as dynamic processors (e.g., various dynamics processors (e.g compressors, gates, limiters), equalizers (graphic EQ, parametric EQ), effects (e.g., reverb, delay), or amplifiers (e.g., guitar amps, bass amps) to ensure that each track sounds as intended. At the end of the mixing process, all the processed tracks are combined into a stereo mix, 5.1 mix, or Dolby Surround mix or Dolby Atmos (e.g. for cinemamovies), depending on the project's requirements. In music production, mixing plays a crucial role, and the quality of the mix can be a determining factor in the ultimate success of a song.

WHAT IS A GOOD MIXDOWN? - IMPORTANT COMPONENTS IN MIXING

Mixdown = mix down.

A mixdown is understood to mean the mixing down or downmixing of the individual tracks within a track in order to then export or bounce it as a stereo file.

Mixing involves editing individual instruments and/or vocal tracks. All individual elements are processed separately from each other and in relation to each other, so that they create a homogeneous overall picture for the subsequent mixdown Mastering to edit. A common Mixig technique includes this Top-down mixing.

The variation of quiet and loud elements and sections makes a track diverse and interesting. Typically, the chorus should be the loudest section of a track and is mixed first. After that, the verses can be mixed to match it, and the intro, interludes, pre-choruses, and outro can be balanced.

In audio terminology, the term "head room" describes the space between the transient (the loudest peak in dB) and 0dBFS (decibels full scale). This should always be considered to prevent unpleasant distortions and to give the mastering engineer enough room for improvements during their audio surgical procedures, without exceeding the magical 0 dBFS threshold.

While mixing your song, you should continually ask yourself where you want each instrument/vocal to be in terms of frequency content and energy. Achieving a balanced depth layering allows you to position sounds, instruments, vocals, or effects as "close", "narrow", "far away", "up", or "down", which can be accomplished through various reverbs and placement in the stereo panorama.
